The Church of St. Cyril and Methodius with the Seminary, the first modern Catholic university institution in Bosnia and Herzegovina, is located in the Old Town, on Josipa Stadler Street.
The complex was built between 1892 and 1896 according to the project of Josip Vancaš, and with the intention of witnessing the unity of Western and Eastern Christianity, the church was dedicated in September 1896 to the holy apostles Cyril and Methodius. The seminary has been using the eastern wing of the building since 1969, and the western wing in 1973. Since then, it has been operating continuously until 1992, when it stopped working due to the war. In the last war, the buildings of the church and the seminary were shelled several times and suffered considerable damage, as can be seen in the photo of the stained glass window.
The stained-glass windows were originally made in a well-known studio from Innsbruck, and we got the opportunity to restore and make new stained-glass windows on the front of the church in 2022. First, the facade stained-glass windows were made, which show the patrons of the church in the middle part and the portraits of St. Paul II on one side and Josip Stadler on the other. sides.
The restoration, i.e. the creation of a replica of the damaged stained-glass windows, lasted 6 months, and it began with the careful removal of the remaining parts of the glass from the lead mesh. All parts have been preserved in order to be able to reproduce the work of the Austrian studio as faithfully as possible. We reconstructed the missing parts based on an old photograph, and we used the original colors, i.e. pigments. The selection of glass required careful analysis and colors that are no longer produced were replaced with similar ones.
The original sketches were approved by the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments and with the blessing of the dean Prof. Zdenko Spajić.
